Preview | Semi-Final berth on offer as UL welcome MTU Cork in the Fitzgibbon Cup

UL and MTU Cork will be battling to book a place in the Fitzgibbon Cup Semi-final.

The University of Limerick will be looking to continue their Fitzgibbon Cup journey this Tuesday as they take on MTU Cork in Castletroy in the Fitzgibbon Cup quarter-final.

Six times champions, UL have been in scintillating form thus far and are one of the favourites to win the championship.

Their opponents, the amalgamation of CIT and IT Tralee will be looking for a first ever title under their new guise.

UL all but qualified for the the quarter-finals after they comprehensively dispatched TUS MidWest by a score of 5-30 to 0-14 in their opener.

They guaranteed progression with a similar performance against TU Dublin as they claimed a 5-25 to 1-14 win. If UL can carry that sort of form over to their match with MTU, the visitors could be in for a very long night.

MTU Cork were defeated by GMIT on their last outing by a very small margin of 1-19 to 1-17 that saw them qualify for the last eight by finishing second in their group. They had opened their account with a six point win over Trinity that secured progression to the quarters.

After such a remarkable performance last time out, UL are likely favourites to win the contest on the night. However, MTU cannot be ruled out with the Fitzgibbon Cup producing a number of upsets throughout the years.

The winner of the contest will play either IT Carlow or UCC in the last four.

The game will take place at the UL Sports Grounds at 7pm on Tuesday February 8.

IT Carlow face UCC on the same evening with two more quarter-finals on Wednesday evening. Cian Lynch’s NUIG take on WIT while TUS face GMIT in the other last eight ties.
