Limerick’s O’Dwyer Bridge included in council restoration plan

LIMERICK City and County Council is currently compiling a tendering framework for the cleaning and restoration of a number of bridges in Limerick.

That was the response to a question from Labour Party councillor Conor Sheehan at this month’s Metropolitan District meeting regarding plans to restore O’Dwyer Bridge on Athlunkard Street.

The five-span hump-back reinforced concrete bridge, which spans the Abbey River, was built in 1931 and is dedicated to the memory of the Most Rev ET O’Dwyer Bishop of Limerick (1886-1917).

Cllr Sheehan said that the paint on the bridge was in a “deteriorating” condition.

He was informed that the bridge was included in the tendering framework which was now being compiled by the council.

“Pending funding availability and subject to suitable weather conditions, we hope to complete these works later in the year,” said Senior Engineer Hugh McGrath.
