Round Up | Hurlers draw, Munster tame Dragons, soccer stalemate

MUNSTER win in a record-equaling performance while Limerick are still looking for their first win in the hurling league

In this weeks weekly round-up, we will cover Limerick’s battle in Ennis, Munster’s fantastic win over Dragons, William O’Connor in the darts, the battle in the Premier League continues and much more!

Hurling

Limerick took on Clare away in Ennis as the two teams were only able to battle to a stalemate. Both teams lost men to red cards late on as it finished 0-18 apiece in Cusack Park. Limerick’s search for a League win goes on as they welcome Offaly in the final round on Sunday week.

Division 1A action resumed with Wexford getting the better of Offaly at home by a score of 1-22 to 2-12. Cork and Galway had an exhilarating battle with the Rebels coming out on top. Kilkenny beat Dublin in Parnell Park by a score of 2-23 to 0-16. Waterford and Laois were the only other victors in Division 1 beating Tipperary and Antrim respectively.

Elsewhere, Ardscoil Rís reached the Croke Cup final after defeating Good Counsel New Ross by seven points on Saturday afternoon. Niall Moran’s side will face St Kierans College Kilkenny after they bested the Harty Cup champions St Joseph’s Tulla.


Football

Among the few Football matches this weekend, Galway beat Offaly 2-17 to 3-10 in Division 2. Longford and Fermanagh came out on top over Wetsmeath and Laois in Division 3. Tipperary narrowly escaped Wexford in Division 4 winning by just a point. The final game of the weekend saw Cavan take the win on the road to Sligo


Rugby

Munster equaled their record tries scored in a match putting 10 home past Dragons in a 64-3 win.

Ulster and Connacht both played on Friday night with contrasting results. Ulster hosted Cardiff beating them 48-12 while Connacht travelled to Edinburgh losing horribly 56-8. Leinster rounded off the Irish fixture beating Benetton Treviso 61-17 on the road.

Scarlets and Ospreys were the only other winners of the weekend overcoming both Glasgow and Zebre respectively.


Soccer

Treaty United took on the Cobh Ramblers last Friday night. The two sides called it even at 0-0 leaving the Treaty side in fourth place with a game in hand.

The title race in the Premier League continued as both Liverpool and Man City were able to seal victories in their fixtures at the weekend beating West Ham and Man United respectively. Chelsea remain in third place with their 4-0 win over Burnley. Arsenal managed to move into fourth spot with their win over Watford.

Tottenham beat Everton 5-0. Wolves lost their third game in a row losing to Crystal Palace 2-0. Newcastle continued their winning ways under Eddie Howe beating Brighton. Aston Villa had a convincing win over Southampton. Brentford and Leicester were the final two winners beating Norwich and Leeds respectively.


Darts

William O’Connor reached the semi-finals of the UK Open on Sunday evening. The Cappamore native was defeated by Danny Noppert who went on to beat Michael Smith in the final. The Limerick man is up to 34th in the Order of Merit after beating World Number One Peter Wright en route to the final.


Hockey

Catholic Institute moved within two points of Pembroke at the top of the Women’s EYHL after beating Pegasus on Saturday. They missed the chance to move to the top of the table, falling to Railway Union on Sunday but will have the chance to do so when they meet Pembroke on March 19, should they overcome Loretto this weekend.


NBA

The Miami Heat (44-22) maintained their place atop the Eastern Conference with three successive wins. They lay ahead of the Philedelphia 76ers (40-24) and the defending champions, the Milwaukee Bucks (41-25) who have won five in a row. The Brooklyn Nets ended their losing streak and have moved to .500.

In the Western Conference, The Phoenix Suns (52-13) are eight games clear of the Golden State Warriors (45-22), who are a half game ahead of the Memphis Grizzlies (44-22). 2020 Champions, the Los Angeles Lakers lie in 9th, 4.5 games behind neighbours, the Clippers.
