Limerick dog owners told to be aware of lambing season

LIMERICK Gardaí are urging people to keep their dogs on a leash when near livestock during lambing season.

“More than 3,000 sheep and lambs are killed or injured each year by dogs,” said Sgt Ber Leetch, Crime Prevention Officer at Henry Street Garda Station.

“It is every dog’s instinct to chase, even if they are usually obedient and good with other animals. But chasing by dogs can do serious damage to sheep, even if the dog doesn’t catch them.

“The stress of worrying by dogs can cause sheep to die and ewes to miscarry their lambs. If you live in or near a farming area, you must make sure that your dog cannot escape your property as it may find its way on to land being grazed by sheep,” Sgt Leetch advised
