Dromcollogher and District Respite Centre launch GoFundMe campaign

THE Dromcollogher and District Respite Centre launched the campaign in order to raise funds to build an additional three en-suite bedrooms. To comply with HIQA regulations and maintain social distancing, the centre needs to build these three bedrooms.

Local dairy farmer, Seamus Stack set up the first stand-alone respite centre in Ireland and it has provided temporary care for the elderly in Limerick, Cork and Kerry since it first opened its doors.

His vision inspired the community and through a huge voluntary effort in conjunction with various statutory bodies (HSE and Pobal), led to the first respite centre opening in 2002.

The Dromcollogher and District Respite Centre first opened in April 2002 and the single-storied centre incorporates a 14-bedded residence to provide short-term respite care for the older person and at the same time, relief for their primary carers. It operates on a 24-hour basis, seven days a week for 50 weeks per annum.

“Our service is available to all those who need it in the local community, further afield and surrounding areas of Limerick, Cork and Kerry. In line with our mission and ethos, fees are maintained at an affordable cost per week.

Our residents receive complete nursing care 24/7, and their holistic needs are assessed and then met for their stay. As a result of charging a small fee for Respite Care, fundraising remains a vital component of our income. The local community has been most generous in the past 20 years to enable us to continue providing a high level of care to each resident;” organsiers wrote on the GoFundMe page.
