Single release and tour from Somebody’s Child

SOMEBODY’S Child otherwise known as Cian Godfrey, launched with a slew of great indie-pop singles in 2018-2019, and released his 20-Something EP during the 2020 lockdown that included hit singles ‘Hold Me Like You Wanna’ (1.5 mil streams) and ‘We Could Start a War’ (3.2 mil streams), which gained BBC Radio 1, Radio X, RTÉ Radio 1, 2FM and Today FM attention.
Never one to rest on his laurels, two EPs followed in quick succession (2021’s Hope, Amongst Other Things and Staying Sane), and when he was finally able to perform his first headline tour of Ireland and the UK in late 2021, the shows witnessed large crowds of enthusiastic fans and an atmosphere of celebration.
This week he shared a new single ‘Broken Record’ and announced he’s signed to cult indie label Frenchkiss Records. Speaking about the video for the new single, Cian says, “It explores my fear of growing up. Getting older and feeling trapped, attempting to reconnect with my former self and trying to regain a sense of innocence that was once taken for granted.”
Syd Butler, Founder and President of Frenchkiss Records says of the signing, “Frenchkiss is thrilled to be able to work with Somebody’s Child. I love their ability to layer both mature songwriting with vulnerability. This kind of authenticity is something that I find is lacking in much of today’s music. Somebody’s Child provides this exact element that is still needed, both in recording and playing live. They are nothing short of amazing.”
It’s “unapologetically loud” and sets out his stall perfectly – perhaps as direct as SC has ever sounded, it’s a song of lament juxtaposed with a stadium-ready chorus. It harbours resentment and drive simultaneously, as Godfrey explores themes of youth against a wall of electric guitars as if Oasis had a new frontman in Matt Berninger (The National).
Somebody’s Child will play Limerick at Dolans on Saturday February 25 2023.
