FILM COLUMN – Sissy

Aisha Dee as Cecilia in Hannah Barlow and Kane Senes' 'Sissy'

‘SISSY’ is an Australian black comedy about an Instagram influencer with a body count that is quickly gaining on her follower count.

Cecilia (Aisha Dee) and her childhood bestie Emma (Hannah Barlow) swore that they’d be friends forever and see their days out together in the same nursing home.

This was all well and good until Alex (Emily De Margheriti) entered the fray and ripped their friendship apart, creating an awkward division that has, literally, left an indelible mark into adult life.

Now with the appearance of a cool, calm, and all-smiling wellness influencer, Cecilia bumps into her old pal years later and is invited to a secluded country house – which, as it turns out, is owned by Alex – for Emma’s hen weekend bash.

Things get off to a rocky start. Alex is not at all happy to have her former foe in attendance. Cecilia, or ‘Sissy’ as she was known back then, must use every tool in her self-care armoury to keep the passive-aggressive snipes from spiralling into all out carnage.

As it turns out though, Cecilia is happiest and really only being true to herself when she is dispatching her old school chums to the great nursing home in the sky.

Directed by Hannah Barlow and Kane Senes, ‘Sissy’ is ‘Heathers’ for the TikTok generation.

Now showing on Shudder, this is a stylish and murderous romp with a killer performance from its leading lady. Cecilia comes off as the ‘Amelie’ of homicidal maniacs and despite some of her grisly endeavours, it is hard not to be won over by her quirky personality and dazzling smile, which shelters her more psychotic tendencies.

As dark as it is entertaining, this is a breezy slasher movie that could be considered a bit of light relief for anyone bingeing on Netflix’s ‘Dahmer’ series at present.

This really is lots of bloody fun! Think ‘The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’ crossed with ‘The Loved Ones’.
