Limerick Council to assess archaeological potential of city development site

Limerick Labour Party councillor Conor Sheehan.

THE proposed residential development of the Orchard Site on King’s Island in the historic heart of Limerick City is currently approved to tender stage.

That was the response from the City and County Council executive to a query from Labour Party councillor Conor Sheehan at last Monday’s meeting of the Metropolitan District.

“In advance of progressing tender and construction processes for the main development, the Council is procuring an advance site excavation contract to de-risk and resolve the site’s archaeological potential,” said Senior Executive Officer Brendan Troy.

“This is expected to be ongoing across the first quarter of 2023. The main development contract is expected to follow through the ensuing summer months,” he explained.
