A PLANNING application has been lodged with Limerick City and County Council for the development of 98 residential units on the outskirts of Mungret village.

The site, beside the Westward Ho Bar, will comprise of 38 semi-detached houses, 48 terrace houses, 12 duplex units, a creche, and vehicular and pedestrian access to the proposed development on to the N69.

Speaking to the Limerick Post, Fine Gael councillor Daniel Butler said: “There is a general welcome for further housing to allow more young local families have the opportunity to live in their home area of Mungret.”

However, key concerns have emerged in relation to a number of issues including a traffic management plan for the development.

“At peak hours, traffic already backs up to the village in the morning and this development will add a lot of extra traffic to a busy section of road. There will also be secondary impacts on side roads such as the Caher Road, where we are seeing high speeds as well as high traffic volumes on a narrow country road.

Safe access on to the N69 will be another issue, given the traffic volumes.

“The second concern to residents is the need for local facilities to match the development. The village area really could do with a local shop and there is a belief locally to not repeat the mistakes of the Celtic Tiger building loads of houses but no community resources,” Cllr Butler added.
