A MAN has this evening been arrested by police in Northern Ireland on suspicion of murdering a woman in Limerick this past Tuesday (April 4).

Gardaí in Limerick said they were conducting forensic examinations of two scenes as part of their ongoing investigation into the woman’s killing.

A 26-year old man was detained earlier today (Thursday) by officers from the Police Service of Northern Ireland, a Garda spokesman confirmed.

The victim, a woman in her 20s and believed to be from Romania, was found stabbed to death in an apartment block on the Dock Road, Limerick City, around 1.30pm on Tuesday, sources familiar with the case said.

“Investigating Gardaí are aware that detectives from the PSNI Serious Crime branch have arrested a 26-year-old man on suspicion of murder,” a Garda spokesman said.

Earlier Gardaí said they had appointed a Garda family liaison officer to maintain contact with the young woman’s family.

Gardai have not yet named the woman, nor did they release the results of a post mortem conducted on the body by the State Pathologist, Dr Linda Mulligan.
