Limerick railway gatekeeper honoured for life-saving action

A LIMERICK railway gatekeeper has been honoured for saving the life of an intoxicated person who wandered into the path of an oncoming train last year.

Keith O’Reilly was presented with  the Infrastructure Individual of the Year Award at this year’s Iarnród Éireann Health and Safety Awards.

The citation with his award stated that it was presented to Keith “for his professionalism, and bravery in dealing with a sensitive situation that occurred while he was on duty in May of last year.

“His act of bravery by removing an intoxicated person from the path of an oncoming train to a position of safety undoubtably saved the individual’s life,” the citation added.

Iarnród Éireann Chief Executive Jim Meade said that safety was their number one priority as he commend Keith for his bravery and swift actions in bringing this person to safety.

“It could have had an extremely tragic outcome. As an organisation we continue to strive to provide the safest possible environment for our customers and our staff,” Mr Meade added.
