Limerick man chased by Gardai was “behaving like a teenager”

Judge Patricia Harney.

A 43-year old Limerick man who was chased by Gardaí before being found in possession of €100 worth of cannabis behaved “more like a teenager” than an adult, a Judge said.

Before Limerick District Court was Roy Behan of St Ita’s Street, St Mary’s Park, who pleaded guilty to possession of the drugs and said they were for his personal use.

The court heard that when Gardaí spotted Mr Behan in St Mary’s Park on the day in question, he fled to try to avoid them.

Mr Behan’s solicitor told the court that, on the day, he was riding a bike rather than running away and Gardaí caught up to him.

Addressing the fact that Behan has 20 previous convictions, mostly for drugs offences, the solicitor said “in his own words, he is sick of the life he has been leading”.

Judge Patricia Harney remarked that she expects that “the criminal justice system is sick of him too”.

“Running away from the Gardaí, he was behaving more like a teenager than an adult.”

The Judge fined him €200.
