A LIVELY Limerick man celebrated his 100th birthday in style among family and close friends in The Strand Hotel.

Michael McInerney, who was born on May 7, 1923, celebrated turning 100 with his children Brendan, Noelle, Michael Jnr and Kieran, along with an enthusiastic crowd of friends and well wishers.

Mr McInerney was born and raised in Reidy Park in Limerick City, where he lived with his nine siblings. At the age of 14 he took his first job in the former Lloyd’s grocery store on Glentworth Street, to help provide for his large family.

At the age of 33 he married the late Maureen Grossman in St Joseph’s Church on O’Connell Avenue. Before his retirement, Michael worked as a sales representative at Sloan’s on Roche’s Street for many years.

Now an active member of the community at St Camillus’ Community Hospital on the Shelbourne Road, Michael says his secret to a long life is plenty of fish, a few glasses of Jameson and lots of laughing.
