A NEW supermarket, along with almost 40 apartments, are to be delivered on the outskirts of Limerick City.
Limerick City and County Council planners gave the green light for the significant development at Towlerton, Ballysimon, which will see German discount retailer Lidl build a new store, along with 38 apartments, a cafe, and other shop and office spaces.
The development will consist of five new buildings, with one of these operating solely as Lidl’s new store.
Another of these will be a single-storey cafe building, while the other three will be mixed use commercial, office, and residential.
The building that will house the apartments will be a six-storey building with four commercial units on the ground floor, accompanied by 38 apartments overhead.
10 one-bedroom apartments will be built, with 26 two-bed units and two three-bed units.
The area at Towlerton is currently undergoing significant development with the new Bon Secours hospital being built in the area, as well as the new building for the Limerick Educate Together secondary school, which will accommodate 1,000 students.
Planning for the new Lidl development was granted by Council planners subject to 26 conditions restricting working hours, ensuring any phone or internet wires are dug underground, and ensuring that the finished site has all the necessary road markings.
The Council also stipulated that a licensed archaeologist be employed to do a dig on the site to identify any potentially significant finds due to the presence of a standing stone on the site, which will be incorporated into the designs.
The Lidl store at Towlerton will be the chain’s sixth store in Limerick, following the recent opening of the retailer’s Dock Road store.
