Case against Limerick Gardaí adjourned until December

A CASE of alleged attempts at perverting the course of justice by a retired Garda Superintendent and four serving Garda, before Limerick Circuit Criminal Court has been adjourned.

Matters in the case against retired Limerick Gda Supt Edmond “Eamon” O’Neill, (56), with an address in Co Clare, and Sergeant Annemarie Hassett, (39), Sergeant Michelle Leahy, (47), Garda Tom McGlinchey, (51), and Garda Colm Geary, (36), were subject to a pre-trial hearing before judge Tom O’Donnell, which concluded last Monday.

Judge O’Donnell adjourned proceedings to December 11 for mention.

The five accused are charged with a total of 42 counts of attempting to pervert the course of justice which relate to the alleged squaring away of fixed charge penalty notices for a number of persons.

The allegations arose out of a probe led by the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation (GNBCI) into alleged corruption in office by members of An Garda Síochána.

The charges against the five accused relate to alleged offences on dates between October 9, 2016 and September 6, 2019.

The five accused, who have been returned for trial before Limerick Circuit Criminal Court, have been granted legal aid to cover the cost of a junior and senior counsel as well as a documentary junior counsel.

The court was previously told that any their trial could last up to eight weeks.
