Limerick TD asks Government to assist free newspaper publishers

Fianna Fáil TD Willie O'Dea

LOCAL Limerick Fianna Fáil TD Willie O’Dea asked the Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport, and Media in the Dáil last week if she has any plans to assist the free newspaper publishers of Ireland.

The former Minister of Defence also asked Minister Catherine Martin if she would be prepared to meet the free media sector’s main representative body.

The veteran Limerick politician was of the view that free newspapers perform a very important function in society.

In response, Minister Martin said that “the print media sector is undergoing a profound change and Government acknowledges that assistance is needed to preserve and support a diverse, vibrant, and independent media sector, which is essential for our society, democracy and cultural development.”
