Celebrations planned for Athlunkard Street’s 200th birthday

O'Dwyer Bridge at Athlunkard Street.

ATHLUNKARD Street will be 200 years old next April and a local community group are planning celebratory events to mark this unique milestone.

A project they would like to see completed in connection with the celebrations is the refurbishment of O’Dwyer Bridge.

“It is in a shocking condition, with paint peeling off all over the bridge,“ a spokesman said.

“We are also hoping that the four ornamental lamps which once graced the bridge will be replaced,” he added.

Celebrations planned for the anniversary include celebrity concert in the church, band recital, and a book chronicling the amazing history, social and otherwise, of this unique thoroughfare.
