O’Mahony to lead Ireland in Six Nations Championship

Peter O'Mahony has been named Ireland captain for the upcoming Six Nations Championship.

PETER O’Mahony has been unveiled as Ireland captain for the upcoming Six Nations Championship.

O’Mahony surprisingly stepped down from a similar role with Munster captain in the Autumn.

Ireland coach Andy Farrell said: “Our new captain, Peter, is a born leader and someone who has been an influential figure for Munster and Ireland for many years. I am confident that the squad will continue to benefit from his leadership skills, both on and off the field.

“He is thoroughly deserving of this honour, and I know that he will relish working closely with the wider leadership group and squad over the coming campaign. I would like to congratulate him and his family at this special time.”

Munster representation in the squad is through Tadhg Beirne, Jeremy Loughman, (Garryowen), Craig Casey (Shannon), Jack Crowley, Conor Murray (Garryowen) and Calvin Nash (Young Munster), while Oli Jager and Thomas Ahern (Shannon) are chosen as training panellists.
