Thefts of heating fuel increasing, says Limerick crime prevention officer

Limerick Garda Crime Prevention Officer Sgt Ber Leetch

THEFTS of heating fuel are becoming a serious problem, particularly in public buildings, with the latest victim being a national school, according to a local crime prevention officer.

“It is important to protect your home heating fuel, but added security measures are required if heating fuel is for a premises that is unattended at times,” Sergeant Ber Leetch said.

“A building alarm can be extended to a shed or garage if your oil tank is within them or a stand-alone fuel tank alarm can be fitted if they are out in the open.”

“Layer up the security on your fuel tank, it should be contained within a structure that is capable of being locked,” Sgt Leetch advised.
