Limerick senator welcomes Justice Minister’s plans for clampdown on anti-social behaviour

Fine Gael Senator Maria Byrne.

LIMERICK Fine Gael senator Maria Byrne has welcomed recent moves by Justice Minister Helen McEntee to clamp down on knife crime and anti-social behaviour across Ireland with tougher sentencing.

Speaking after the Minister secured approval from government to amend legislation around sentencing, Senator Byrne said: “Garda figures show were 2,146 knives seized across the country in 2022, which is a concerning trend that we do not want to see gain momentum.”

She added that “when knife crime does occur in Limerick, we need to ensure Gardaí here are supported in their efforts to tackle these kinds of offences and that criminals pay the price” and these “measures to amend legislation sends a clear message that Fine Gael will ensure they do.”
