LIMERICK City and Council Council has failed to deliver even the most basic services for the people in its charge. At least that’s according to Social Democrats candidate for City North, Shane Hickey-Oโ€™Mara, who claimed that, in every area, people are crying out for even the basics.

Mr Hickey-Oโ€™Mara, a psychotherapist and youth theatre director by trade, who grew up in the Caherdavin area, said that โ€œin Ballynanty, the closure of the community centre is being raised as is the failure to tackle broken footpaths and uneven roads. In Kileely, Caherdavin, and the North Circular Road, it’s the lack of facilities being delivered for young people including youth clubs, playgrounds, and sports facilities. The Mill Road and Ashbrook want regular bus services to support their communities, particularly those with limited mobility.โ€

โ€œAs one man said to me, โ€˜I have the pass, but I donโ€™t have the busโ€™. Another lady said she would love to get the bus but the bus stop is too far away for her to walk to. This just isnโ€™t
good enough in 2024.”

The Soc Dems candidate told the Limerick Post that โ€œon a recent canvas in Ballynanty, I asked three teenagers what would make Limerick City North a better place to live and
one of them instantly replied, โ€˜a swimming poolโ€™”.

“I felt inspired by their enthusiasm and their ideas on how we can improve our area. We need to have a council that actively listens and engages with local communities.”
