THE mother of murdered Irish boxing champion Kevin Sheehy said she hopes that whoever was involved in her sonโs killing will be brought to justice.
This comes as Gardaรญ on Monday made a new arrest in the case.
Gardaรญ on Monday morning arrested a woman in her 30s in connection with Mr Sheehyโs killing five years ago.
One man was convicted of the murder in December 2021, however Gardaรญ suspect others were involved in aiding and abetting convicted killer Logan Jackson.
โGardaรญ in Limerick have arrested a woman as part of ongoing investigations related to the murder of Kevin Sheehy in County Limerick in July 2019,โ a Garda spokeswoman said.
The woman was detained, according to the Garda spokeswoman, at a Garda station in the Southern region.
She confirmed โinvestigations are continuingโ into Mr Sheehyโs 2019 killing.
The 20-year-old Limerick boxer, who had been tipped to represent Ireland at last monthโs Olympic Games in Paris, was mowed down by UK criminal Logan Jackson repeatedly with a 4×4 jeep on July 1, 2019.
Jackson, of Longford Road, Coventry, was found guilty of Mr Sheehyโs murder, by a juryโs unanimous decision, at the Central Criminal Court in December 2021.
Reacting to the new arrest Kevinโs mother, Tracey Tully, said: โI hope that whoever was involved in my sonโs murder will be brought to justice.โ
โKevinโs murder has been life-changing for me and my family, the evidence that I heard during Logan Jacksonโs trial was overwhelming and it has been mentally torturing for me living with this.
โI just want justice for my son, and hopefully then I can properly grieve for him, I havenโt been able to grieve fully for Kevin.โ
Last July, Ms Tully called on Gardaรญ to renew efforts to arrest and question three persons suspected of involvement in the killing of the five-time national boxing champ.
Ms Tully said she would not rest until all persons allegedly involved in her sonโs death were jailed.
Logan Jackson was sentenced to 22 years in a jail in his native England last July.
He was initially sentenced to life at Limerick Prison in December 2021, but he was later transferred to his native UK, despite Ms Tully undertaking a legal case against the Minister for Justice in an effort to keep Jackson in jail on Irish soil, arguing that her sonโs killer should serve his sentence in the country where he took his life.
However Ms Tully said she was โover the moonโ that Jackson must now, by order of the Sheriffโs Court in his native Coventry, serve at least 19 years and 192 days in prison before he can even apply for parole.
โHe would have got around 17 years here in Ireland. Even though it will never bring my son back, I am happy knowing I will never have to hear about him for a long time,โ Ms Tully told this reporter last July.
Jackson repeatedly drove over Kevin Sheehy in a vicious and unprovoked attack after the boxer was walking home from celebrating Limerickโs 2019 Munster Hurling Final win over Tipperary.
Jacksonโs trial heard that Mr Sheehy, who had no links to crime and was regarded in his local community as a sporting hero, had tried to get up off the ground after being first struck by Jacksonโs UK-registered Mitsubishi Shogun jeep but that he was run over two more times.
Ms Tully said she and her family, including Kevinโs partner who was pregnant with their first daughter at the time he died, have been left traumatised by the nature of her sonโs death and their prolonged battle for justice.
โWe never got time to grieve Kevin or celebrate his wonderful life. A friend of his sent recently me a photo of them all walking home from the Munster final together, laughing and happy. I couldnโt stop crying when I saw the photo, it is a bittersweet photo of your child five years on that you have never seen before.โ
