A LIMERICK senator this week welcomed news that almost 500 carers across Ireland were for the first time awarded a State pension.
This follows legislative changes by Government that came into effect this year entitling those who provide care to family and loved ones on a full-time basis to qualify for the State’s contributory pension scheme.
“This is a major benefit for people who have cared for their loved ones for years and who are now finally receiving recognition for all their hard work,” said Limerick Fine Gael senator Maria Byrne.
