THE first meeting of the new Oireachtas group dedicated to supporting Shannon Airport has been described as “positive”.
That’s according to Shannon Airport Group CEO Mary Considine, who said that the group was “pleased to meet with Oireachtas members who have pledged their support for Shannon Airport as a crucial national asset”.
The aim of the group is to advance the cause of Shannon Airport and any governmental policy areas that can help support and enhance it, along with seeking continued state funding from government under the Regional Airports Programme, and supporting the development of new routes in commercial aviation and cargo traffic in and out of the airport.
The group, which consists of 24 cross-party TDs and senators from across Limerick, Clare, Galway, and Tipperary, is being led by County Clare Fianna Fáil TD Cathal Crowe, who said the members are “committed to advocating at every opportunity for the use of Shannon Airport and for policies that recognise the strategic importance of Shannon and promote balanced regional development”.
“A priority of the group is for an immediate review of National Aviation Policy and to seek continued state funding under the Regional Airports Programme.”
Shannon CEO Mary Considine welcomed the first meeting of the group, saying that the airport appreciates their “backing as we continue to advocate for a new National Aviation Policy that considers the country as a whole and its considerable underused capacity to ensure the effective use of state assets like Shannon Airport”.
