IT HAS nothing to do with a series of vampire films, but it may have more people out after dark on Shannonside, as Limerick City and County Council announces its new Twilight Thursdays initiative.

The new Council initiative is aimed at enhancing the night-time economy in Limerick City and is encouraging groups and businesses to keep the fun going after the sun goes down on the last Thursday of every month.

The new programme will also see a 40 per cent discount on the FreeNow taxi app on Twilight Thursdays, to allow those outside the city more opportunity to hit the tiles.

The initiative is part of the Night Time Economy pilot programme, funded by the Department of Tourism, dedicated to stimulating the night-time economy. Limerick is one of nine locations included in the programme.

The Twilight Thursdays initiative kicks off this month (May 29) and will run on the last Thursday of every month up until December 18.

It is hoped that the monthly nights will include “cultural events, live entertainment, and late-night business openings to create a dynamic and welcoming atmosphere for all” and will “transform Limerick into a thriving night-time destination, providing both locals and visitors with memorable experiences”.

As part of the initiative, the Council has put out the call for expressions of interest from local businesses to take part and host night-time events.

“The Night Time Economy project will fund the animation of the city centre and specific events on key dates, ensuring quality performances and activities that are accessible and free to the public,” a Council statement said.

“We are also working closely with An Garda Síochána to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all attendees.”

Mayor of Limerick John Moran said Twilight Thursdays will allow “Limerick to showcase its vibrant culture and thriving night-time economy”.

“This initiative is just one part of our comprehensive action plan to improve Limerick City’s night-time offerings. We are excited to see our city come alive with energy and enthusiasm every month.”

The Council’s Night Time Economy Advisor, Craig Power, added that “Twilight Thursdays will not only boost our local economy, but also enhance the social and cultural fabric of Limerick”.

“We are seeking support from local businesses to make this initiative a success and stand ready to assist them in any way possible. Working together is the key to creating a vibrant and inclusive night-time environment that benefits everyone.”
