LAURA O’Connell of Broadford, County Clare, will be among just 50 on the starting grid at the inaugural Formula Woman Festival in Dubai on Saturday and Sunday.
This two-day spectacle isn’t just a race, it’s a global statement showcasing the fastest women from across the world competing for their nations on one of the most thrilling tracks (Dubai Autodrome).
O’Connell will be joined by fellow countrywoman Hanna Celsie of Dublin.
A multi-talented sportswoman, O’Connell represented Clare at under-age level in camogie, as well as competing in horse-riding, gymnastics, and badminton.
An early introduction to motorsport by O’Connell’s father, Patrick, proved momentous.
She said: “From a young age I have been a huge fan of motorsport and karting and grew up watching Formula One legends. That has been instrumental in influencing my own ambitions.”
“Traditionally, motorsport has been a male dominated sport, but with major events like Formula Woman, it now means that dreams can become a reality.”
The 25-year-old said that “growing up, there were few female role models in this industry, something which is changing now, albeit slowly. Opportunities like Formula Woman provide an amazing chance for female racing drivers and for them to then inspire the next generation to pursue their sporting goals.”
Ahead of the weekend, she said that her “ambition is to secure a top 10 spot but that is a huge challenge”.
“The field is extremely tough and hugely competitive with many experienced drivers on the grid. In saying that, I intend to give it my all and represent Ireland to the best of my abilities.”
The action will be broadcast to a massive television audience of many millions in 120 countries, with an estimated attendance of around 60,000 spectators at the event itself.
The ultimate objective of Formula Woman is to develop a pathway to progress female drivers to compete regularly in all forms of motorsports all the way up to Formula One.
