
OVER 2,000 social homes were delivered in Limerick last year – four per cent of the national total.
That’s according to the latest figures from the Department of Housing, Local Government, and Heritage.
This comes as 500 people have been on the waiting list for social housing in Limerick for seven years or more.
Over 10,500 social homes were added to the housing stock nationally last year, with an additional 24,600 new-build social homes currently on site or at design and tender stage.
The department’s figures reflect an 8.6 per cent rise for Limerick compared to 2023 figures.
Out of the 2,423 people in Limerick who had been on the social housing list in Limerick last year, figures showed, 701 were aged between 30 and 39 years of age, while 558 people between 40 and 49 were awaiting a home.
The majority of applicants on Shannonside were listed as being unemployed, with 1,257 in 2024, dropping slightly from 1,298 in 2023.
Nearly 700 people on the social housing waiting list in Limerick were reported as living in private rented accommodation, including applicants in receipt of rent supplements.
Over 650 people were still living with their parents, while 322 lived with a relative.
The report showed that almost 500 people have been on the social housing waiting list for seven years or more, not far off the 417 people listed as waiting six months or less.
Those waiting times drop significantly for people waiting between three and seven years – reaching as low as 102.
Most of the applicants were single (1,284) or a single parent with at least one child (586).
