GARDAÍ appealed for witnesses following a drive-by shooting in Limerick City this Thursday (May 8), as fears grow of an ongoing violent feud escalating.

Gardaí said they responded to shots fired at Hyde Road in Ballinacurra Weston around 1am this Thursday morning.

Sources said Gardaí believe the shooting is the latest in a string of gun attacks, pipe bomb explosions, and petrol bombings on the southside of the city.

No one was injured in this morning’s attack, but a number of houses were damaged.

A Garda spokesman said that “Gardaí attended the scene of an incident where a firearm was discharged in the Hyde Road area, Ballinacurra Weston, Limerick, on Thursday 8th May 2025 at approximately 1am.”

Appealing for witnesses they urged “anyone who was in the Hyde Road area between 1am and 1.30am and who may have information about the incident to contact investigating Gardaí”.

Gardaí can be contacted at Roxboro Road Garda Station on 061 214 340, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.

In an earlier attack on April 15 last, residents in the Prospect area were evacuated from their homes when an army bomb disposal unit made safe an improvised explosive device (IED) after a firebomb device was discovered outside a home.

A security cordon was established and neighbouring properties were evacuated as an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team attached to the Defence Forces removed the improvised device containing an accelerant.

Three days prior to that, the army EOD team made safe another IED that was found close to a car that was firebombed in Ballinacurra Weston.

When Gardaí arrived at that scene, the occupants of a nearby house told officers that their property had been damaged by gunfire.

Gardaí believe the incidents are linked to individuals involved in an ongoing violent feud.

About a dozen more pipe bomb attacks and arson attacks on cars and homes, as well as shootings and stabbings, have spread from Ballinacurra Weston and Southill to the Corbally in recent weeks.

Last month, Gardaí hand-delivered Garda Information Messages (GIMs) to two men, informing them of a credible threat to their lives.

Chief Superintendent Derek Smart recently warned that anyone involved in the feud will be pursued by Gardaí, arrested and brought before the courts.

Chief Smart said that young children have been caught up in the violence and expressed concern that they will be injured or worse if the feuding continues.
