Limerick TD appointed chair of Dáil Budgetary Oversight Committee

Limerick TD Richard O'Donoghue.

“TRANSPARENCY, accountability, and value for money must be at the heart of every euro spent. Taxpayers deserve no less.”

So said Independent Ireland and County Limerick TD Richard O’Donoghue as he was appointed chair of the Dáil Committee on Budgetary Oversight.

The committee plays a key role in scrutinising the government’s fiscal policy, examining pre- and post-budgetary decisions, and ensuring public spending aligns with the principles of transparency and efficiency.

Deputy O’Donoghue, a founding member of Independent Ireland, says he has long championed greater accountability in public expenditure.

His party noted that his appointment reflects a commitment to ensuring that taxpayer money is spent wisely and that waste and mismanagement are addressed.

“I am honoured to take on this role and will work constructively with all parties to ensure that the committee delivers robust oversight,” said Deputy O’Donoghue.

Independent Ireland leader Michael Collins welcomed the appointment, highlighting that O’Donoghue’s dedication to fiscal responsibility and commitment to the public interest make him an ideal choice for this position.

“Under his leadership, the committee will be a strong advocate for prudent financial management and democratic accountability,” Deputy Collins opined.

Deputy O’Donoghue has been vocal in calling for reforms to address government waste and inefficiency, including the establishment of an independent watchdog to oversee public spending.

As chair, he said he aims to foster a collaborative environment, working across party lines to ensure that fiscal policies are thoroughly examined and that the public’s trust in government spending is upheld.
