TOP-CLASS cycle racing sets off on Shannonside this weekend as the Irish National Criterium Championships get underway on Saturday May 17 on the streets of King’s Island.
And there’s fun for all the biking family as adults and kids can take advantage of a closed circuit in the city to enjoy a spin without any cars.
Limerick’s Greenmount Cycling Academy are hosts for races from Under-8s up to the elite mens’ and women’s championship races.
The action will take place on a tight technical circuit where power and superb handling skills are required to be in contention for a medal. Racing will be fast and furious as riders are tasked with completing multiple laps of the challenging city centre circuit.
A free ‘inclusion ride’ at 5.30pm on the day will follow the same traffic-free 1km circuit as the racing and is open to cyclists of all ages and abilities.
A strong field of Ireland’s best cyclists are entered with top ranked cyclists from Dublin, Kerry, Wexford, and further afield coming to the Treaty City to fight for top honours.
The fight for top honours will be spearheaded by international road racer Gabrielle Fox.
A large video screen and live commentary will be in place so no moment of the action will be missed, along with plans for a barbecue on the day.
Admission for spectators is free all day, although registration is required. See Greenmount Cycling Academy on Facebook or the Cycling Ireland website for further details.
