Man questioned in connection with €140,000 cocaine seizure in Limerick City

An estimated €140,000 of cocaine was seized by Gardaí in the Englishtown area of Limerick City.

GARDAÍ hit a local drug gang for €140,000 worth of cocaine in a planned search and recover operation in the city’s historic old quarter this Tuesday (May 21).

The drugs were seized during a raid on a property at Englishtown by Gardaí attached to the Divisional Drugs Unit supported by regional Garda units.

A man in his 30s was arrested at the scene and questioned by investigating Gardaí.

Gardaí said that “as part of ongoing investigations targeting the sale and supply of controlled drugs in the Limerick area, Gardaí from the Divisional Drugs Unit in conjunction with a number of regional units executed a search warrant at a residence in the Englishtown area of the city shortly after 3pm” on Tuesday.

“In the course of the search, Gardaí discovered and seized approximately 2kg of cocaine with an estimated street value of €140,000 (pending analysis).

A man in his 30s was arrested at the scene under Section 15 of the Misuse of Drugs Act and was detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996.

Gardaí said the drugs seized would be sent to Forensic Science Ireland for analysis, adding that their investigations were ongoing.

The seizure forms part of Operation Tara, an enhanced national anti-drugs strategy launched by Garda Commissioner Drew Harris in July 2021.

Gardaí said the focus of Operation Tara is to disrupt, dismantle, and prosecute drug trafficking networks at all levels — international, national, and local — involved in the importation, distribution, cultivation, production, local sale, and supply of controlled drugs.
