CATTLE are grazing at Shannon Airport, and they’re not blocking the runway.

A herd of Doimeann cattle – a native Irish breed – have become the first to graze on airport-owned land in Ireland.

The herd’s new home at Thady’s Hill, a 10-acre site near Shannon Airport, which they share with rare and endangered species of native grasses and flowers (including bees and pyramidal orchids), is part of the first phase of the airport’s ongoing Farmland Biodiversity Enhancement Project.

Led by the Shannon Airport Group Biodiversity Team and supported by local Clare farmer John Quinlivan and botanist Phoebe O’Brien, the environmentally-conscious project is “already making strides in restoring and protecting the rare habitat of Thady’s Hill and its unique plant species”.
