Limerick woman had face slashed trying to defend friend

Gardaí in Henry Street are investigating a fatal three-vehicle road traffic collision that occurred on O’Curry Street, Limerick last night, Wednesday 4th March at approximately 9:40pm.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to the incident.

A WOMAN who tried to stop her friend being stabbed had her face slashed by a youth wielding a knife in the city centre.

Gardaí said there is “zero tolerance” for knife crime in the city and appealed for witnesses to the horrifying incident to come forward.

The attack happened in the early hours of last Thursday morning (May 15) around Chapel Lane in the city centre.

The pair were were approached by two youths on bicycles. One of the youths and the man exchanged words, which escalated into a verbal row, Gardaí said.

The second youth came towards him brandishing a knife and attempted to stab the man.

He had a lucky escape when his brave companion tried to intervene and was cut on her cheek, above her lip.

Both youths then fled the area on bicycles.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to the assault to contact them on 061 212 400.

Sergeant Natasha Walsh said “there is zero tolerance for knife crime here”.

“In recent years An Garda Síochána has employed numerous successful strategies to reduce knife crime. Some young men believe that carrying a knife could protect them, but the opposite is true, frequently the knife is taken from them and used against them.

“Even a small knife can cause a dangerous wound. Carrying a knife can put you in jail. You don’t have to injure somebody, and simply being found in possession of a knife is a crime that you could be arrested for.”
