THREE Limerick projects have been honoured at this year’s ECO-UNESCO Young Environmentalist Awards (YEA).
This year’s YEA awards took place in the Convention Centre in Dublin.
The young people from County Limerick were among more than 1,000 students from across Ireland who attended the major event, at which over 100 competing projects were showcased, representing 65 schools and youth organisations in 28 counties across Ireland.
The winning projects representing Limerick included the “Wild Ireland Card Game” from Coláiste Ióasef, Kilmallock, the winner in the Junior ECO-Entrepreneurship category.
The Kilmallock group developed an educational card game to teach people about native Irish animals, with each card featuring different facts about the animal.
The school also nabbed top prize in the Junior Food Category for their project “We’ve got Worms!”, using social media posts, videos, and workshops to raise awareness about the benefits of vermiculture for soil quality in the community.
And the winner of the People’s Choice award went to a group of students from Scoil Pól in Kilfinane for their project “City Greens”, addressing food accessibility, environmental impact, and community health by developing affordable, DIY systems from recycled materials to help people living in cities grow fresh, healthy food in small spaces.
Now in its 26th year, the Young Environmentalist Awards recognise the work of young people who are tackling key issues in relation to climate and biodiversity loss, taking environmental action in their school or community and coming up with creative solutions to solve environmental issues.
