LIMERICK are serious contenders in the 2025 Tailteann Cup, the second-tier of the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship.

It follows commendable group wins over London, Antrim, and Westmeath.

In the latter, Emmet Rigter knocked over a late winning point at O’Moore Park in Portlaoise.

In what was Limerick’s first ever senior victory over The Lake County, an in-form James Naughton landed an incredible eight points.

Next up is a visit from Wexford to the Gaelic Grounds next Sunday at 3.45pm (Referee: Brendan Griffin, Kerry).

This is a repeat of the Division Four final from March at Croke Park, a riveting contest in which Limerick triumphed 3-11 to 0-18.

Goals were what won out, and the Shannonsiders grabbed those in style at Croke Park through Tommie Childs, Peter Nash and Daragh Ó Siochrú.

Earlier in the League, however, Wexford were full value for a win over us at Rathkeale’s Mick Neville Park.

The Model County also come into the tie on the back of a huge (5-23 to 2-21) home victory against Antrim on Sunday.

It was only earlier this year that Limerick won its first outing in 17 fixtures with a much-needed positive result against London in Ruislip.

And, thereafter followed a string of wins – including one in which Naugthon grabbed a record 4-12 against Waterford – which culminated in that statement League final defeat of fancied Wexford.

There is much to admire about this truly committed bunch of players, under the fine guidance of Jimmy Lee, Michéal Cahill, Evan Talty, and Pa Ranahan.

Newcomers include Mark McCarthy (Fr Casey’s) and Darragh O’Hagan (Mungret St Paul’s), while the group has familiarity through Josh Ryan, Colm McSweeney, Iain Corbett, Paul Maher, Emmet Rigter, Danny Neville, Tommy Childs, Peter Nash, Barry Coleman, and captain Cillian Fahy.
