ASKEATON Contemporary Arts holds their annual artist residency programme and festival throughout the month of June.

Founded in 2006, artists from around the world have been at the centre of the community investigating, uncovering and creating new understandings of the local area.

Welcome to the Neighbourhood, curated by Michele Horrigan, looks to the rich layers of Askeaton’s daily life as its inspiration.

This Friday (June 20), Deirdre O’Mahony and Nora Foley will be at the Askeaton Community hall for a screening of their 2024 movie The Quickening.

The movie recorded farmers, scientists, and agricultural policymakers and transcribed their conversations into folk song for singers and musicians, accompanied by breathing animals and the movements of insect and creatures of the Irish earth.

There will be a walking tour of Desmond Castle by stonemason and former site foreman, John Moone, for an informative tour of the castle and its expansive grounds, including The Hellfire Club, Constable Tower and Banqueting Hall on Monday June 23 at 10am.

There is also an evening or archaeological discovery planned on Tuesday June 24 at 8pm in the Askeaton Community Hall, with Paul O’Keefe and Sean Tiffin.

The pair will present a talk and display of artefacts found in and around West Limerick during recent excavations as part of the Foynes-to-Limerick Road Project. Since early 2024, a team of over seventy-five archaeologists have carried out excavations in advance of the road’s construction.

More information on all free events taking place as part of the festival can be found on askeatonsarts.com.
