Clarification sought about rumours of IPAS centre in Limerick

Metropolitan District councillor Olivia O'Sullivan.

FINE Gael councillor Olivia O’Sullivan sought clarification to rumours of accommodation for international protection applicants being proposed on the North Circular Road.

“The Council have secured confirmation that IPAS have received no offer of accommodation at St Lua’s and they are not examining the property for use.

The owner of an apartment at this location had applied to Limerick City and County Council’s Planning Dept to seek a Section 5 Declaration of exempted development ‘should the subject premises be used as a residence for International Protection Applicants’.

A similar case from Laois County Council was referred to as precedent in the application.

The Planning Department confirmed to the property owner that technically it is not considered ‘development’ to use the property for IPAS.”
