WORKS are set to begin on a new cricket crease and safety batting area in the city, much to the delight of fans of one of the fastest growing sports in Limerick.
Mayor John Moran signed a mayoral order to appoint a contractor for the design and installation of the sporting facility at Mungret Park.
The facility will feature a concrete base and rubber shock pad with synthetic grass, along with a steel frame and protection net.
Mayor Moran said he was โdelighted to sign off on” the project, which he said was โabout delivering on a promise in the More for Limerick mayoral programme to find more space for cricket and support a sport thatโs growing fast across our city and countyโ.
โI recently met with representatives of Limerick Cricket Club who explained the difficulties they have finding safe spaces in which to play their favourite sport. This is a positive step towards that.
โItโs great to know that as soon as the end of July, kids and adults alike will be out here playing, learning, and connecting through cricket.โ
The crease battling area, according to a statement from Limerick City and County Council, โis specifically for the use of batting practice and is not associated with open gameplayโ and that it will be free and available for all to use “in a responsible manner”.
Works on the sporting facility will begin the week of July 7 and run for around two weeks.
