Cricket crease on the way for park in Limerick City

Works on the sporting facility will begin the week of July 7 and run for around two weeks.

WORKS are set to begin on a new cricket crease and safety batting area in the city, much to the delight of fans of one of the fastest growing sports in Limerick.

Mayor John Moran signed a mayoral order to appoint a contractor for the design and installation of the sporting facility at Mungret Park.

The facility will feature a concrete base and rubber shock pad with synthetic grass, along with a steel frame and protection net.

Mayor Moran said he was โ€œdelighted to sign off on” the project, which he said was โ€œabout delivering on a promise in the More for Limerick mayoral programme to find more space for cricket and support a sport thatโ€™s growing fast across our city and countyโ€.

โ€œI recently met with representatives of Limerick Cricket Club who explained the difficulties they have finding safe spaces in which to play their favourite sport. This is a positive step towards that.

โ€œItโ€™s great to know that as soon as the end of July, kids and adults alike will be out here playing, learning, and connecting through cricket.โ€

The crease battling area, according to a statement from Limerick City and County Council, โ€œis specifically for the use of batting practice and is not associated with open gameplayโ€ and that it will be free and available for all to use “in a responsible manner”.

Works on the sporting facility will begin the week of July 7 and run for around two weeks.
