SEVERAL clubs around the city environs of Limerick, among them Monaleen, Mungret St Paul’s, and Na Piarsaigh, are candidates for a new €200,000 Urban Club Development Grant.

The Strategic Club Grant is to be targeted in support of larger GAA Clubs based in urban areas.

It is open to such clubs in all six counties across Munster.

According to a spokesperson for Munster GAA, administrators of the scheme, “an urban area shall be considered as an area with a growing population and that a club can demonstrate continually increasing playing numbers and increased team numbers over the previous three-year period”.

A process has already begun of identifying a number of clubs that may qualify for this grant and the provincial council will select such a club to go forward to the National Finance Committee for approval, it stated.

The spokesperson added: “It is essential that a club needs to demonstrate a facility shortage based on growing playing numbers. Lastly, if a club has already received a large amount of funding from another source, such as the Immigrant Investor Programme, then they should be excluded.”

Information is available on munster.gaa.ie, and the closing date for expressions of interest is July 18.
