SOUTHSIDE Boxing Academy at Galvone Industrial Estate boasts “one of the finest boxing facilities in the country”.
That was the claim of Sports Minister Patrick O’Donovan and its reopening following a major €430,000 upgrade.
The project was funded by the Economic and Social Intervention Fund (ESIF).
Limerick City and County Council’s Regeneration, Sport, and Recreation Directorate co-ordinated the works with local firms Carr Architects leading the design team and contractor PBC Limited, a well-established (1979) local family owned construction company.
Minister O’Donovan said that “the transformation of Southside Boxing Academy shows the power of targeted investment in our communities”.
“The €430,000 provided through the Economic and Social Intervention Fund has revitalised this important facility and created a space where young people can thrive. This is exactly the kind of regeneration that delivers real, lasting impact, supporting health, inclusion, and opportunity.”
Sports enthusiast and local Councillor Frankie Daly added that “this upgraded facility is a tremendous asset for the community”.
“It’s a place where young people are empowered to make positive life choices while cultivating discipline and teamwork. The investment has transformed the Academy into a modern, inclusive space that will serve generations to come and continue to make a lasting impact on the area.”
Said Declan White, acting director of Services for Regeneration, Sport, and Recreation with Limerick City and County Council: “This is a significant investment into a social and sporting amenity in a Regeneration area. This club can now continue to grow, thrive and succeed thanks to this investment through the Economic and Social Intervention Fund. We look forward to watching the progress of the club in the coming years.”
