AN IMPRESSIVE 13-year-old boy who joined his favourite band, The Script, to sing live on stage described the experience as a dream come true.
Charlie Comerford, of Dunhill, Waterford, could not believe his luck when the band’s frontman, Danny O’Donoghue, invited him on stage for a duet at Thomond Park, during the finale of The Script’s concert last Saturday night.
Young Charlie charmed the crowd as he sang the band’s hit Never Seen Anything “Quite Like You alongside his musical hero.
Speaking to local radio station Live95, Charlie said: “I thought I was the luckiest guy in the whole world, because there was 28,000 people there and out of the 28,000 people (Danny) picked me.”
Recalling the moment that O’Donoghue plucked him from the crowd, Charlie recalled that “I just felt so lucky because they are my favourite band in the whole world”.
“Everybody give it up for Charlie,” O’Donoghue screamed as he invited the delighted boy to join him on stage.
Young Charlie warmed the heart of O’Donoghue and the sold-out Limerick crowd at a sun-drench Thomond Park when he pointed at the singer and sang “I’ve never seen anything quite like you tonight”.
O’Donoghue returned the favour with “I’ve never seen anything quite like Charlie tonight”.
“Deadly,” beamed O’Donoghue after the boy hit the final note on the singer’s piano to bring Thomond Park to its feet.
“They’re all singing your name bro,” O’Donoghue told the boy as the crowd chanted “Charlie…Charlie…Charlie”.
Charlie said that he was “maybe a little nervous” up on stage in front of thousands of Script fans, “but I felt very excited because it’s not very often you go in front of 28,000 people with your favourite ever”.
Charlie also got a selfie on stage with Danny O’Donghue, which he has shared with a growing fan base on his social media channel, his mother Laura Firth said.
And Charlie said he hopes that rock stardom may yet be written in his own future stars.
His mother, who accompanied him at the concert, told this reporter: “It was just unreal, Charlie is such a huge fan of The Script.”
“It all happened so quickly, I just thought, oh my god, I can’t believe this is happening for Charlie because he deserves it so much. He’s a great kid and when he loves something he nearly gets obsessed with it.
“The Script became an obsession, he just loves listening to their music, and he loves singing.
“He wants to write songs, and so, for that to happen for him, is just great,” the proud mother said.
