THE world-famous links (old) course at Lahinch GC will host the Pierse Motors sponsored South of Ireland Championship from next Wednesday through to the following Sunday (July 23 to 27).
Not surprisingly, it has attracted a full field of 150 players from across the country.
Over the opening couple of days, entrants will attempt to be inside the top 64 following a strokeplay competition for the knock-out stages.
Entrants of possible familiarity to our readership are Jordon Boles (Charleville), John Dillon (Lahinch), Jonathan Keane (Lahinch), Stephen Loftus (Lahinch), Eoin Magill (East Clare), Aaron McNulty (Lahinch), Peter Sheehan (Ballybunion), and 2012 winner Pat Murray, Adare Manor.
Martin OโSullivan, Captain Lahinch GC, said: โPlayed mid-summer at peak holiday time in
Lahinch, the โSouthโ is highly regarded amongst the players where golf is the talk of the village throughout the week. Lahinch and the surrounding area is looking forward to another memorable Championship and all visitors are welcome to come along and join in the festivities.โ
โLahinch, which will host the Walker Cup in September 2026, appreciates the
continued support of Golf Ireland in ensuring that our leading golfers have the opportunity to
follow in the footsteps of previous winners such as John Burke, JB Carr, Paul McGinley, Darren Clarke, and Graeme McDowell.โ
Michael Coote, Chairperson, Munster Region Golf Ireland, said: โGolf Ireland is delighted to
continue its long association with Lahinch. The South of Ireland Championship is
one of the oldest and most prestigious championships in the world and we wish all the
competitors well when the tournament commences.โ
โThe roll of honour of past winners truly reflects the high esteem in which the South of Ireland is held by both the players and supporters of amateur golf.โ
