LIMERICK is among nine local authorities across Ireland not to appoint a single female councillor as the cathaoirleach (chair) of a municipal district this year.ย
That’s according to the See Her Elected (SHE) programme, who said that the recent appointment of municipal district chairs across Irish local authorities “highlighted the significant gender gap in local political leadership”.
According to SHE, no female chairs were appointed this year in Limerick, Donegal, Offaly, Roscommon, Kilkenny, Carlow, Kildare, Westmeath, or Mayo.
Two of Limerick’s four municipal districts this year appointed women as deputy chairs (leas-chathaoirleach), the Metropolitan District and the Adare Rathkeale District.
