THE construction of a new wastewater treatment plant in Askeaton has been warmly welcomed as a “critical first step in addressing the infrastructural challenges in the town.”

Uisce ร‰ireann will commence site investigation works for a new plant to upgrade wastewater facilities in the County Limerick town.

Work to the site includes upgrading the existing pumping station, installing a rising main connecting the station to the new works, connecting the Lismakeera housing estate to the new network and the decommissioning ย of the existing treatment plants at Lismakeera and Wyeth Nutritionals.

Mayor of Limerick John Moran said the new plant “is a very welcome move in the right direction for the community of Askeaton”.

“All the pieces need to fit into place to prepare the Shannon Estuary Growth Triangle for a future that should be transformational for the entire region. A key action was ensuring Askeaton’s wastewater needs are met,” Mayor Moran said.

“While we recognise that this is just the beginning of a complex process and there is still plenty of work ahead, it is a clear signal that the infrastructure needs of Askeaton are being addressed, which is long overdue.”

Cathaoirleach of the Municipal District of Adare Rathkeale, Cllr Ger Ward, added his own welcoming of the news, saying that “the lack of a modern wastewater treatment system has held back housing, investment, and environmental progress in Askeaton”.

“I commend the community and my Council colleagues for their persistence in keeping this issue on the agenda.”
