A COURT heard that it took five Gardaí to subdue one man who was caught red-handed breaching a court order that he should stay away from his mother’s home.
Judge Patricia Harney was hearing a case in which the man – who cannot be named for legal reasons – admitted breaching a barring order on July 7 by going to his mother’s home.
The District Court heard Gardaí had been called to an address in the city by the man’s mother, who had a court order preventing him from coming to her home.
When they went to investigate, “he walked on site while they were there, in full view of the Gardaí. He was highly intoxicated,” the judge was told.
The judge heard the accused initially ran away from Gardaí when he saw them.
Reading the facts on the charge sheet, Judge Harney noted that “it took five Gardaí to restrain him. He’s a big, strong man.”
His solicitor, Sarah Ryan told the court that the man “is not welcome at home,” as his wife also has a barring order against him. “The only other place he could go, as he saw it, was to his mother’s.”
Judge Harney heard the man has 109 previous convictions, 19 for breach of barring orders.
Other convictions included hijacking, possession of knives, theft, unauthorised taking of a vehicle, and 20 public order convictions.
Remarking that the accused has “an horrendous record”, the Judge sentenced him to eight months in jail.
She set bail for an appeal at €500.
