THE Salesian College in Pallaskenry will be prepared to host one of Ireland’s largest youth events, Scouting Ireland’s Phoenix Challenge.
Over 600 scouts from all over Ireland will descend on Pallaskenry from August 14 to 17,ย the biggest annual competition for scouts to showcase the many skills they have learned during their time scouting.
“The Phoenix Challenge is the highlight of the scouting year and the largest single gathering of scouts from across the island of Ireland.ย It is a fantastic weekend reflecting the true spirit of scouting where those participating learn important life skills such as teamwork and leadership, while having fun, testing themselves in the challenges set and making new friends,” said Sean Sheehan, Scouting Ireland CEO.
“This year’s event is all the more special as the Phoenix Challenge celebrates 20 years. The very first Phoenix Challenge was held in Pallaskenry in 2005 and it is fitting that we should return to Limerick in its 20th year.”
This Thursday (August 14), scouts will spend much of the day constructing campsites. On Friday and Saturday, they will participate in challenges including building, rafting, emergency situations, mapping projects, backwood skills, and general team-building challenges.
The scouts, all aged between 12 and 15 years old, will compete in teams for awards including Scout Engineering Award, Environmental Award, Entrepreneurship Award, Logbook Trophy, Cooking and Eating Trophy, Campcraft Trophy, Skills Based Trophy, and the Leadership Award.
The scout group with the highest points awarded over the weekend will walk away with the prestigious Phoenix Challenge Trophy.
