A MAN was charged before a special court sitting this past Wednesday night (August 20) in connection with an incident in which armed Gardaí detained a man after a number of people were allegedly threatened by a male with knife in a County Limerick town.

Gardaí said the man was charged before Limerick District Court “on a number of offences following an incident in Newcastle West, last Tuesday night, 19th August”.

“Gardaí responded to reports of a male threatening members of the public in the Maiden Street and North Quay areas at approximately 9pm,” a Garda spokesman said.

“No injuries were reported.”

The Garda spokesman added that “with assistance from the Divisional Armed Support Unit (ASU), the man, aged in his 30s, was subsequently arrested at a nearby location and detained at a Garda station in County Limerick under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.”

“He has since been charged and appeared before a special sitting of Limerick District Court on Wednesday evening, 20th August 2025.”

“As this matter is now before the courts, An Garda Síochána is not in a position to comment further at this time,” the Garda spokesman said.
