Planning application lodged for Moyross railway station

IARNRร“D ร‰ireann has lodged a planning application with Limerick City and County Council to construct a new train station at Moyross.

The station is to be located at the rear of Corpus Christi Primary School and Moyross Community Enterprise Centre with access proposed adjacent to both Corpus Christi Parish Church and Moyross Avenue through the Millennium Park.

Funded by the Department of Transport through the National Transport Authority (NTA), the project forms part of the Department of Transportโ€™s Pathfinder Programme, which consists of sustainable mobility projects to be delivered by local authorities and agencies around the country.

The new Moyross station will be located on the existing Limerick to Galway rail line, with connectivity to Limerick city centre, Galway, Cork, Dublin, and beyond.

The new rail station, a statement from Iarnrรณd ร‰ireann said, will also provide connections to Thomond Park, the TUS Gaelic Grounds, Technological University of the Shannon, and other educational and civic amenities.

Iarnrรณd ร‰ireann chief executive Jim Meade said the new station at Moyross “is a key provision of LSMATS (Limerick Shannon Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy) and will provide excellent connectivity for the existing community of Moyross and for future communities”.

The new station will also integrate with Limerick City and County Councilโ€™s proposed University Avenue scheme, as well as the NTAโ€™s BusConnects Limerick, and the proposed Limerick CycleConnects Network.

Subject to planning being granted and funding allocated, it is intended to proceed to tender for construction during 2026, Iarnrรณd ร‰ireann said, with the station expected to take 15 months to construct.

The news was widely welcomed on Shannonside, with Mayor John Moran saying he was “thrilled”.

“People said our idea was a pipe dream when we proposed it a decade ago. But thanks to a broad coalition led by the community, it is now taking steps to becoming a reality.”

The Mayor said that the planning submission is “another small step towards turning our ambitious aims into a reality. A modern, accessible train station will link Moyross and areas like Caherdavin and Thomondgate, indeed the entire Northside, more directly with the wider Limerick region, to other major cities and hopefully soon to Shannon Airport.”

“It will open access to education, jobs, and social opportunities, all while stimulating local business and community confidence.”

Limerick Fianna Fรกil TD Willie O’Dea said the new station is “the kind of investment in infrastructure that Moyross needs and, combined with the new Coonagh to Knockalisheen distributor road, it is a very welcome development.”
