
A DECISION from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) is being awaited in the case of a man who appeared before the courts charged with threatening a number of terrified people with a knife in Newcastle West, County Limerick, a judge sitting in Limerick District Court was told.
Armed GardaĆ were called to respond to the nightmare scene in the county town on Tuesday August 19.
Dermot Knapp Ryan (34), with an address at Sharwood Estate in Newcastle West, County Limerick, was originally charged before a special Limerick District Court the day following the alleged incident, August 20, with āa number of offences following an incident in Newcastle Westā.
āGardaĆ responded to reports of a male threatening members of the public in the Maiden Street and North Quay areas at approximately 9pm,ā a Garda spokesman said at the time.
No injuries were reported from the terrifying incident, GardaĆ said.
āWith assistance from the Divisional Armed Support Unit, a man was subsequently arrested at a nearby location and detained at a Garda station in County Limerick under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984,ā GardaĆ said.
Mr Ryan appeared again before a sitting of the Limerick District Court last week, where Judge Fiona Brennan was told that a direction in the case is awaited from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Judge Brennan remanded the accused man in custody in Limerick Prison until September 9, pending the handing down of directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
