A TECHNOLOGY company, which has just announced 125 new jobs, has also made significant plans for Shannon, signalling further expansion at the cutting edge of internet developments and a coming jobs boost for the Mid West.

The Shannon Airport Group confirmed to the Limerick Post that leading technology firm Mbryonics has leased Block R in the Shannon Airport Business Park – an award-winning, 40,000 square-foot R&D facility designed for advanced manufacturing.

The Galway-based tech company this Thursday (September 4) announced 125 new jobs in Galway as part of its continued expansion.

The firm is opening a new manufacturing facility there with roles in engineering, production, sales, and marketing.

Mbryonics said the announcement “represents a major step forward” in its mission to deliver the “internet in space” and “strengthen Ireland’s role in the global space economy”.

It is understood that the positions will be filled over the next two years.

The company has said its plans for Shannon involve 10 times the number of production units it currently has in Galway – 5,000, as opposed to 500 – indicating the ambition and scale of its investment.

The leasing of the R&D facility points to the fast-growing company investing in high-end jobs in the Mid West.

Mybronics, founded in 2014, already employs 100 people in Galway.

It is working to develop photonic satellite optical communications networks.

In time, it is expected that these technologies will be used to provide internet connections in a more cost-effective and reliable manner than is currently possible with existing links.

Mbryonics has developed satellite technologies that facilitate the transfer of data via laser.

Confirming the leasing of the Shannon facility, a spokesperson for the Shannon Airport Group said that the “announcement of 125 new jobs in Galway, as part of their continued expansion, is a testament to Mbryonics’ ambition and commitment to driving innovation and economic growth across the West of Ireland”.

“We extend our warm congratulations to the Mbryonics team and look forward to welcoming them into our community of pioneering companies in the Shannon Airport Business Park in the coming years.”
